A couple of months ago, I informed you that Asbury UMC, Christ UMC, Williamsville UMC, and Trinity UMC were all embarking on a new adventure, in which we were discerning stronger collaboration with each other. At that time, I asked people to take part in important conversations we were going to have regarding this. Those conversations have taken place, and I want to let you know the fruit of these meetings.

Asbury UMC, Christ UMC, Williamsville UMC, and Trinity UMC, have embarked on a process of envisioning a future of collaborative ministry in our community. We believe that doing this both individually and together will allow God's Spirit to move freely as we discern God's will for us. Within the past couple of months, a core team from each congregation has held specific focus groups unique to their own church, discussing the strengths and challenges of their respective church, our individual and collective needs as churches, how we might better collaborate together with the other congregations (including, but not limited to, sharing resources, finances, ministries, pastoral presence, and a collective mission in our communitie[s]), and how we might develop a  strong, viable and sustainable presence of Methodism in the Williamsville/Amherst community for the future. John Wimberly, an expert in this field, has facilitated these groups.

Now, the next phase begins! Strategic planning committees from each congregation, representing all four congregations, will begin meeting to establish a purpose, mission, and an analysis of viable resources and areas of opportunity. These committees will further the discussion of how to best share resources, pastoral presence, and mission. This is all designed toward the future goal of a cohesive and collaborative ministry in our area.

On February 1, AUMC will be conducting a special Q&A directly after service (around 1145pm) to give all people in our congregation an opportunity to better understand what is happening, answer any questions you might have, and give you voice for any concern or discussion you might have regarding what is happening.

This is a very important time. Your participation in all of this welcome and I invite you into this sacred time of discernment and planning. Therefore, I encourage all people at AUMC to attend this meeting and participate in the discussion.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Pastor Michael Whitcomb-Tavey.
