In the first Avengers movie, Captain America tells Iron Man that he is not the one to make the heroic sacrifice to save other people. This foreshadows what Iron Man does at the end of the movie, when he actually does attempt to sacrifice himself to save New York from a Nuclear destruction. He flies a nuclear weapon out into space, fully intending to die.
In the novel, “The Great Gatsby,” Gatsby consistently and constantly focuses on the green light that shines from Daisy Buchanan’s East Egg dock across the darkness of Long Island. This obsession is emphasized throughout the novel. Ultimately, this represents his hopeless and tragic nostalgia of the past, while simultaneously foreshadowing his failure to attain it. Always seen, but never attained.
Throughout the video game, “Red Dead Redemption 2”, Arthur Morgan consistently and constantly sees visions and experiences dreams of either a deer or a wolf. This foreshadows his fate throughout the game and at the end of the game. Based on decisions that he makes throughout the game, he will either find redemption as a kind hearted soul, represented by the deer, or he will become a predator that stalks the weak, which is represented by the wolf. The more he steers his fate toward a particular position, the more he sees either the deer or the wolf. Thus, the foreshadow not only foreshadows his fate, but ultimately, his character by the end of the game.
These foreshadows are some of the best foreshadows in story telling. They poignantly point us toward profound truth. The Bible utilizes this technique quite often, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. One such example is found in the first few verses in John 2, when Jesus attends a wedding. While there, he turns water into wine.
What does this story foreshadow? How does it’s Truth and Reality touch our soul and affect us? Come and find out this upcoming Sunday!
