Our church is named for Francis Asbury (1745-1816), the first Methodist bishop ordained in the United States. Asbury came to the colonies in 1771, and spent the rest of his life "riding the circuit," preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ across the states and territories. After his arrival in 1771, it is estimated that he preached 16,500 sermons, or at least one a day, and traveled about 270,000 miles, all on horseback. When he came to America, the Methodists numbered 10 preachers and 600 members; when he died, after forty-five years of work, they had 695 preachers and 214,235 members. Bishop Asbury brought the good news to hundreds of thousands. Our newsletter, the Circuit Rider, honors his tradition. For more information on the life of Francis Asbury, click here.
